Head Coverings

1 Corinthians 11:4-5 says, Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved.

I was recently asked: Why don't we obey this command? Isn't it picking and choosing to obey some verses and not others? Here's my answer...I understand this verse to be specific advice to the church in Corinth in light of the unique Eastern culture they lived in.

Concerning the men not covering their heads - once Jesus died, the veil in the Temple was torn in two, showing that nothing separated people from God any longer. The covering on the head represented a degree of separation from God. Unlike in Bible times, if someone wears a hat in church today, they certainly aren't doing so to represent a barrier between them and God. It's simply a fashion statement, not a theological one. Concerning the women making sure they covered their heads - Proper women in Eastern culture would wear a veil over their head. Prostitutes would go around with their head uncovered. So if a woman was sitting in a church service without a veil, it would do three things:

1. It would dishonor her husband because she would send out the message that instead of being his beautiful bride, she was a harlot.
2. It would distract the men. What does a prostitute remind you of? Answer: Sex! At church you're there to focus on God, not sexual temptation.
3. It would distract the women. One of the married women might ask herself "Who's this woman sitting next to my husband?"

Now, just because the advice was specific to the church in Corinth, doesn't mean there's no application for us today. One possible application for today would be to come to church dressed in a way as to not cause other people to be distracted by what you're wearing. If ladies come to church dressed too revealing, it could do thing things:

1. It could dishonor her husband. Instead of sharing her body only with her husband, in a low cut blouse, she could be sharing with every man what is supposed to be reserved for her husband.
2. It could distract the men. The person sitting behind you in church should be focused on God during worship. He should have to struggle with sexual temptation because of a woman's immodest dress.
3. It could distract the ladies. One of the married women might be thinking "I should move us to another seat. I don't want my husband seeing her!"
And while women usually aren't as visual as men, men also ought to dress modestly as well, just to be on the safe side.

  2. What about the verse below that says a woman's hair is her head cover. When I read it in 3 languages and over a dozen of versions I picked up on the sarcasm there. Especially the part that says might as well shave her head bald. In otherwords its a shame for a woman to be bald for her hair is her glory. To this day its rude for men to wear hats in fancy places especially when going out to eat, or even worldy dance clubs I've been to back in the days, not to mention most of the churches out there. With extensive research into this subject and 100's of conversations about it due to the fact that I'm from Eastern Europe and have attended multiple churches with veils as a requirement for women I could say this. According to 1 cor 11 I interpret women's hair is their head cover, wigs or veils shld be worn if they're bold when praying or prophesying. As well as Men shldnt wear hats when praying or prophesying. Otherwise, I think its on par with coming to church with awfully dirty clothes: its inappropriate, distraction, and rude to others. Although I could see if in a certain culture it may be inappropriate other way around how this passage would apply as mentioned in this blog. All in all its only my opinion from my life experiences.

  3. Actually the Greek is different concerning the veiling and the hair being a covering. The hair does not take the place of the veiling. The hair is a natural example of the spiritual truth of the veiling. I take a literal view of this verse. I believe that Paul was sharing an apostolic truth. I do not believe that a man should cover his head while prophesying or praying and a woman should. A man who covers his head dishonors his head which is Christ. A woman who does not cover her head dishonors her head which is man. At one point my family walked this out but stopped due to a bad church situation but I will always believe that it is apostolic truth.

  4. 1 Corinthians 11:5-6 ESV
but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head...
    1 Corinthians 11:15 ESV
...but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering.

I'm sure we could both agree men shouldn't cover their head when praying or prophesying the question here is: Is long hair considered a covering for men/women? According to the Scripture it seems to explain that long hair on men is a disgrace and men shouldn't cover their head, women on the other hand should do the opposite. It even says that her hair is given to her for a covering. Although earlier in the chapter it says that if a women is to have her head uncovered then she might as well cut her hair short (I assume its referring to a buzz cut) or shave her head bald... in other words apostle Paul is being sarcastic, saying if a women will get a hair cut that reveals her head say such as a these pictures displayed on this link:

Then they might as well cut their hair short or shave such as pictures displayed on this link:

So I hope you can see how I came to this understanding.
